On Friday morning Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at his first press conference since the election sharing details about the upcoming throne speech and a plan to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
Carney will select his cabinet on May 12, followed by a May 26th recalling of Parliament concluded with a May 27th throne speech with the involvement of King Charles III.
The involvement of King Charles III will mark the first delivery of the throne speech by Canada’s sovereign since 1977.
The throne speech will be the first motion of confidence of the Liberal minority government under Carney, marking the third straight minority Parliament led by Liberals.
Carney said Canada’s “relationship of steady integration with the United States is over”, a remark he made previously during the campaign.
“It’s important to get engaged immediately, which has always been my intention, which has always been (Trump’s) intention,” said Carney.
“I’m pleased to have the opportunity for quite a comprehensive set of meetings that will take place on Tuesday.”
He recalled his first conversations with world leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres
and Ukrainian President Vlodomyr Zelenskyy.
Carney reaffirmed his July 1st deadline to remove all trade barriers between provinces, by that same deadline he said his middle-class income tax cut will also be implemented.
Carney mentioned that a new cap on temporary workers and international students would be set at less than 5 per cent of Canada’s population down from the previous 7.5 per cent.
Carney’s remarks did not include any mention of balancing the federal budget.
On housing, Carney mentioned that he would increase sales tax relief for homebuyers on homes between $1 million and $1.5 million, differing from Conservative Leader Poilievre’s approach of cutting the GST on home purchases.
Carney said if Conservatives opt to re-elect Poilievre via a by-election, he will ensure it happens as soon as possible “no games, nothing, straight”.
“I’ve already indicated to Mr. Poilievre that if it’s the decision of him and the Conservative Party to trigger a byelection. I will ensure that it happens as soon as possible,” said Carney.
It's nice to see one of Carney's first steps is to arrange a visit from one of his few intellectual equals, none other than Queen Camilla's husband. I'm sure it will be followed by UN representaives, Greta, and Gutierres from the UN cesspool.
