Carney admits illegal guns coming from U.S. but targets law-abiding Canadians anyway
Prime Minister Mark Carney conceded that illegal firearms trafficked to Canada from the U.S. were likely used in recent high-profile shootings in Hamilton, Ontario.
Prime Minister Mark Carney conceded that illegal firearms trafficked to Canada from the U.S. were likely used in recent high-profile shootings in Hamilton, Ontario. This admission comes despite Carney continuing to advance the sweeping legal gun bans initiated by his predecessor, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“I suspect the guns used here are from the U.S.,” Carney told reporters at a press conference Wednesday, referring to a spate of shootings in the city over the past two months that have left several people injured and at least two dead.
Although Carney’s remarks were a departure from previous Liberal government talking points, the prime minister gave no indication that he would be scaling back the costly federal gun seizure program.
Some experts have estimated that the Liberal seizure program could cost taxpayers $2 billion or more.
Even some within the Liberal Party are expressing unease. A recently leaked internal memo revealed concerns from Liberal officials over both the ballooning cost and questionable effectiveness of the forced seizure initiative.
Carney’s comments came in response to a question about the recent surge in violence in Hamilton, where a string of deadly shootings has shocked residents and overwhelmed police.
One such incident occurred on Friday, July 11, 2025, in the area of King Street East and James Street North. According to Hamilton Police, the suspect, 17-year-old Mackale Lavoie, targeted a group of three individuals shortly after 5:25 p.m. One was hit, and as the gunman continued firing, an innocent bystander—26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie—was tragically killed.
In 2020, the federal Liberal government announced a ban on more than 1,500 models of so-called “military-style assault rifles,” accompanied by a mandatory seizure program.
However, the initiative has faced delays, escalating cost projections and has been widely derided as ineffective and unfair by legal Canadian gun owners.
One has to conclude that the liberal objective is, a gun for every criminal, none for the law abiding, all the better to create instability.
