Canadians more supportive of political correctness than U.S. neighbours
A new survey reveals that Canadian support for political correctness has increased over the past five years, exceeding American support.
A new survey reveals that Canadian support for political correctness has increased over the past five years, exceeding American support.
“Political correctness” refers to the belief that language and actions that could be offensive to others, especially those relating to sex, gender, and race, should be avoided.
Vancouver-based Research Co. recently published a survey asking both Canadians and Americans how they felt about the issue and found that a majority endorsed political correctness on both sides of the border.
Support for political correctness was higher among Canadians than Americans, at 59 per cent and 53 per cent, respectively.
“The trendline for political correctness is clear in Canada, jumping from 50 per cent in 2020 to 55 per cent in 2022 and to 59 per cent in 2025,” said President of Research Co., Mario Canseco, in a release on Thursday.
“In the United States, we are back at the proportion first observed in 2020 (53 per cent), after a severe decline in 2022 (45 per cent).”
Hostility towards “political correctness” was higher among American respondents aged 55 and older, at 48 per cent. Whereas, only 30 per cent of Canadians in the same age category felt that way.
When it comes to voting habits, 45 per cent of Canadians who voted for the Conservative Party in the last federal election rejected political correctness, along with 43 per cent of Republicans in the U.S. and 44 per cent of Independents.
However, a majority of both Canadians and Americans said they believe that printing new books to remove words deemed offensive was wrong.
Similarly, a majority of respondents in both countries opposed the concept of re-dubbing movies to remove words that may be deemed “offensive to a specific race or ethnicity,” with 55 per cent of Canadians and 57 per cent of Americans decrying the practice.
“Conversely, more than three-in-five Americans and Canadians think it is a good idea to add a disclaimer to explain that programs or movies are presented ‘as originally created’ and ‘may contain outdated cultural depictions,’” reads the survey.
Three-in-five residents of both countries believe that teachers, politicians, and journalists should act in a politically correct manner, either “always” or “most of the time.”
One-third of Canadians claimed that they always act politically correct because it’s the right thing to do, while 43 per cent said they sometimes act politically correct because it’s the safe thing to do.
Only 11 per cent said they do not act politically correct because it’s the wrong thing to do.
Results were similar among Americans, with a slightly higher cohort of 17 per cent choosing not to act politically correct.
Additionally, one-third of Americans and Canadians believe comedians should “always” or “most of the time” behave in a politically correct way.
If the statistics quoted in this article are true, then Canadians need to pull their collective heads out of their collective butts.
Political Correctness is the precursor to the current Woke ideology we are all suffering from. Typically shoved down our throats by someone like our outgoing, PM (He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named). I've always thought that his masterpiece was 'We don't like to say MANkind, we prefer to term PEOPLEkind.
"Politeness" is not a political stance, it's a human characteristic, typically a genetic trait. People are either polite or they're not. And like sex, morals, and political affiliation, it cannot, and should not, be mandated.
This post is me at my most impolite. Don't like it? My pronouns are &#&&^$!!R%% and 'yourself'.
A shame..
Welcome to the lost country previously known as Canada.
