A 33-year-old man with a history of violent offences faces charges after an alleged stabbing in a northeast Edmonton Canadian Tire parking lot.
Police say the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 28 in the parking lot of the Canadian Tire near 96th Street and 162nd Avenue, an area where residents have reported an increase in vagrancy and criminal activity.
“It was just crazy hoodlum stuff,” said one local when speaking with True North.
“I was there for like thirty minutes, maybe an hour, and I saw drag races, a homeless guy fighting and a bunch of other questionable activities from questionable people,” the Edmonton resident continued.
In a Wednesday media release, Edmonton police charged Nathan Piche with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose after a 64-year-old man was stabbed while loading groceries into his vehicle.
The victim, who did not know his attacker, was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Piche was arrested on a city bus near Castle Downs Road and 104th Street. He was convicted of manslaughter in a 2018 stabbing in west Edmonton and has a record of violent, drug and weapons-related offences dating back to 2008.
Acting Insp. Eric Stewart said police are working with Alberta Crown prosecutors to keep Piche in custody, citing public safety concerns. Piche remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
