Canada's growing illegal dumping problem and the individuals behind it
Widespread Illegal dumping in Canada has led residents of various municipalities to confront the perpetrators and record incidents; the perpetrators, when caught, are almost always Indian.
Several municipalities have recorded a surge in illegal dumping incidents over the last several years. The problem has become so widespread that activists and concerned citizens have recorded several incidents and have been driven to confront the perpetrators.
In every one of the many videos posted online in the last few years where the dumpers are identifiable, the individuals discarding their trash on highways, beaches, parking lots, and privately owned farms have been of Indian descent.
In Brampton, Ontario alone, a city with one of Canada’s largest Indian populations, reports of illegal dumping incidents have more than doubled in four years, rising by 163 per cent from the 2,117 reported in 2020 to 5,568 incidents reported in 2024.
In Surrey, British Columbia, another city with a high concentration of Indian immigrants, the city reported that staff cleaned up illegal dumping from 7,459 sites in 2020.
Over the last few years, however, several cases have been recorded, including activists and community members tracking down whose garbage was dumped after finding identifying information in the trash or catching individuals in the act of discarding their garbage on the side of roads.
