Canada “welcomes” Palestinian election results
Prime Minister Carney contributed $15 million for elections as part of Canada’s recognition of a Palestinian state
Canada “welcomes” the outcome of the first local elections in the Palestinian territories over the weekend. Social media posts praise the vote as “an expression of their resilience and resolve,” referring to Canada’s $15 million contribution to “credible election” in the West Bank.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the funding package at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2025.
His commitments included 3 over three years to “improve government accountability and transparency”, “strengthen women’s access to decision-making,” and a further $15 million channeled through the UN Development Programme for “credible elections and inclusive governance” in the West Bank. The same backgrounder detailed additional support for governance, women’s economic resilience and access to justice.
