Following an escalating cycle of trade talks that broke down, U.S. tariff threats, and Canadian retaliatory tariff announcements, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced further tariffs on “discriminatory” trade practices by Canada and outright bans on some Canadian exports.
Dominic LeBlanc, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Canada-U.S. trade minister, says Canada is ready to get back to the trade negotiations table despite the recent escalation.
The White House announced the new measures on Tuesday, adding all-terrain vehicles and additional dairy product tariff changes to the already announced 50 per cent tariffs on Canada’s exports, including on wine and hockey sticks.
The bans on select Canadian dairy exports are set to come into effect next Tuesday while the new 50 per cent tariffs on ATVs and other dairy products are set to roll in on September 29.
