A 37-year-old Calgary man is facing multiple extortion charges following a months-long police investigation into extortion threats made against a woman in the city’s northeast.
According to the Calgary Police Service, the investigation began in September 2025 after a woman reported that she had been subjected to repeated extortion attempts throughout 2024.
Police allege that between August and October 2024, the victim was contacted on six separate occasions by individuals known to her. During those incidents, she was allegedly pressured to hand over money and valuables and was threatened with violence if she refused.
Investigators with the CPS General Investigations Unit launched an operation in December 2025 aimed at identifying and arresting those responsible.
As a result, Jaspreet Gill, 37, has been charged with six counts of extortion. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 10, 2026.
In the course of the same operation, police also laid unrelated charges against Harpreet Gill, 28, of Calgary. She faces one count of fraud over $5,000, one count of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. She is set to appear in court on April 6, 2026.
Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski of the CPS General Investigations Unit said the impact of these types of crimes extends beyond the immediate victim.
“We understand how deeply these incidents affect not only the victims, but also the broader community and their sense of safety,” Gawlinski said. “We want the public to know that our officers are committed to thoroughly investigating these crimes and will continue to hold those responsible accountable.”
Police noted that while the alleged victim is a member of the South Asian community, investigators believe this case was an isolated incident and not connected to a broader extortion series currently under investigation.
The Calgary Police Service and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams continue to investigate a separate string of extortion cases targeting members of the South Asian community.

I knew it from "Calgary man". I started reading, group contact extortion, I thought it doesn't sound like a Canadian crime. Sure enough, Mr. Gill. As Indian as curry, as Canadian as a Palm Tree.

Same population of Indians, not Canadians.
