CAF changes division positioning as military prepares for war

The dramatic change in structure is to prepare the army for rapid deployment of large forces that can sustain prolonged operations.

The Canadian Armed Forces has begun undertaking one of its largest structural changes in decades by shifting divisions from a geography basis to the areas they were designed for in preparation for potential conflict.

“This is a big change,” said Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of the new 1st Canadian Division on Thursday. “This is not an exercise in restructuring the deck chairs. We’re doing this in order to be more agile, more lethal, more relevant to defend Canada.”
