Brother of slain police officer calls for stricter bail reform
Canada’s current bail system allows for another hearing to be scheduled as soon as 18 months later in the event of a denial, even for the most serious offenders.
The brother of a slain police officer is calling for changes to Canada’s catch-and-release bail system as he prepares for the third parole hearing of his brother’s murder in less than a decade.
Cory Baylis’ brother Constable Todd Baylis was shot and killed while on patrol in North York in 1994. He was 25 years old. The officer he was with at the time was also seriously injured. His killer was under a deportation order at the time of his arrest and was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
