Brookfield-linked company seeks 30-year licence to export Canadian hydro to U.S.

A subsidiary of Mark Carney’s former company wants to ship B.C. hydro to the United States for the next 30 years.

Brookfield Renewable subsidiary Powell River Energy recently applied to export up to 700,000 megawatt-hours annually from two B.C. hydro facilities to its U.S. affiliate through 2055.

The proposal has drawn more than 2,600 submissions, with most, if not all, opposed, according to federal records — while putting Carney’s ties to Brookfield back under scrutiny as electricity demand surges at home.
