As Christians we must exercise wisdom. Charlie Kirk seems to have done just that. The danger lies in the temptation to equate allegiance to Christ with allegiance to the nation (any nation). The flag is not equal to the Cross. Followers of Christ are to respect and obey the governing authorities, whether democratically elected, or authoritarian because those rulers are servants of God and govern at God’s pleasure. When the leader of a nation (any nation) claims to be equal to God the Supreme authority, a line has been crossed. The follower of Christ then faces a crisis and a decision: whether to obey God or “Caesar”. (cf. numerous examples are found throughout both the Hebrew Bible as well as the New Testament, and of course in history. The reality today is that most Western Christians of all denominations including evangelicals, are largely biblically illiterate. They are at a loss to articulate the faith in a way that makes sense to people of other faiths and no faith. They don’t know their history. They may know what they believe propositionally by quoting the Bible chapter and verse and by appealing to the Creeds that sum up the faith. But they are hard pressed to explain why they themselves believe what they profess, especially when confronted by a post-truth culture whose highest value is summed up in the words “I identify as…”
