U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that American conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, died from his wounds after being shot during a tour stop in Utah.

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!” wrote Trump on Truth Social. Trump also ordered that flags be flown at half-mast nationally in honour of Kirk, according to the White House.
The incident occurred at a public town hall at Utah Valley University, where local students were invited to ask Kirk questions.
Hundreds of youth gathered for the event when a gunshot was heard. A video of the incident shows Kirk collapsing from his chair.
On X, US President Donald Trump encouraged all to pray for Kirk: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk…a great guy from top to bottom. God bless him!”
US Vice President JD Vance reacted to the news on X: “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
According to media reports, Vance plans on heading to Utah, where the killing took place.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Kash Patel also issued a statement, saying that federal authorities were assisting in the investigation.
“We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation,” wrote Patel.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre responded to the shooting calling for the attacker to be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, Canadian leftwing TikToker and podcaster Rachel Gilmore expressed concern over how ‘far right’ fans of the American influencer would react following the shooting.
Authorities told CNN that no suspect is in custody despite an earlier statement by the university that a suspect was apprehended. Videos on social media show a man being detained by police but authorities have not confirmed the identity of the suspect.
