BREAKING: Carney thanks Trump for Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal
Carney welcomed a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump that Hamas is ready for “lasting peace” after the group agreed to a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza.
Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump that Hamas is ready for “lasting peace” after the group agreed to a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada welcomed Hamas’s commitments to relinquish power and release hostages.
“We encourage all parties to immediately work to turn commitments into reality, and to advance peace and security in the region. We thank President Trump for his essential leadership,” Carney said in a statement.
Trump released a 20 point plan for Gaza detailing steps including a political transition without Hamas, humanitarian aid distribution, a permanent cessation of hostilities, an exchange of prisoners and hostages. The plan also included the creation of an independent authority to govern Gaza during the interim until the Palestinian Authority’s promised reforms are realized.
“Based on the statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly … this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.”
He added Canada remains committed to supporting humanitarian aid in Gaza and to the creation of “a sovereign, democratic and viable State of Palestine” alongside Israel.
Carney also announced Friday he will travel to Washington on Oct. 6, ahead of a meeting with Trump on Oct. 7, where the leaders are expected to discuss the Gaza ceasefire plan and preparations for the first joint review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement.
The White House maintains that the plan enjoys global support from Canada and regional partners such as Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey.
Israel confirmed it will move ahead with Trump’s plan.
A statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the country is “preparing for the immediate implementation of the first stage” to secure the release of all hostages, adding that Israel would work “in full cooperation with the President and his team to bring the war to an end” in line with Trump’s vision.
The announcements marked the most significant push for sustained peace since the war began nearly two years ago.
Refresh my memory… was Carney a financial guy or an undertaker?
