Carney secures majority with byelection wins
Prime Minister Mark Carney has secured a majority government after the Scarborough Southwest and University–Rosedale byelections were called for the Liberals.
The Liberals have secured a majority government after winning the Scarborough Southwest, University–Rosedale and Terrebonne byelections.
By securing a victory in all three, Prime Minister Mark Carney passed the required 172 seats to form a majority government and now holds 174 seats in the House of Commons. This marks the first time the Liberal government has had a majority since 2019, and the first time one has ever been secured federally with the help of multiple floor crossings.
After Carney’s Liberals lured five sitting MPs, predominantly from the Conservative caucus, to cross the floor and join the Liberal government, Carney just needed to win only one of the three byelections to secure his majority government
