Investigators in Brampton are seeking the public’s assistance following a fraud involving suspects described as “South Asian” who were impersonating police officers.
Peel Regional Police said on Friday that they became aware of the suspects following an incident on August 9.
That’s when police say a victim responded to a spam text and shared personal information. Around 5:45 p.m., a male caller claiming to be an undercover officer with the Toronto Police Service told the victim there had been fraudulent activity on their account.
Shortly afterward, two suspects arrived at the victim’s residence near Finegan Circle in a black SUV. The victim handed over bank cards, and $15,000 was subsequently withdrawn from their account. Police say the suspects did not provide any official identification.
The driver is described as a South Asian male, 36 to 38 years old, with short black hair and a heavy build, wearing a checkered dress shirt. The passenger is also described as a South Asian male.
The vehicle is described as a new black four-door Mitsubishi SUV, equipped with a working computer between the front seats bearing a police sticker.
Peel Regional Police urge residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect debit and credit cards.
Anyone approached by someone claiming to be a police officer should request identification and verify credentials by contacting their local police service.
Keep bringing them in stupids.
