A British Columbia nurse who was accused of committing professional misconduct for public comments about transgender ideology has filed two human rights complaints, arguing she was targeted for expressing her political beliefs.
Amy Hamm was sanctioned earlier this year by the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives after a disciplinary panel ruled she had made “discriminatory and derogatory statements” about transgender individuals between 2018 and 2021 while publicly identifying herself as a nurse.
In its ruling, the panel said Hamm’s conduct was “unprofessional” and could undermine public trust in the healthcare system.
In a statement released March 13 and updated in June, the BCCNM said: “Nurses and midwives occupy a position of trust and influence in our society, the college will continue to stand up against discrimination, and believes it is a core aspect of our public protection mandate to ensure nurses uphold the important principle that the health care system is non-discriminatory.”
The decision has been appealed by Hamm, who has taken her case to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.
In a news release, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms said Hamm’s complaints allege discrimination by both Vancouver Coastal Health, which terminated her in March 2025, and the college itself.
JCCF argues that Hamm was penalized for expressing views on gender and women’s rights during her personal time.
Hamm said the process began after she participated in a billboard campaign supporting author J.K. Rowling in 2020. “That’s when the complaints started,” she told The Candice Malcolm Show, adding that she went through a 22-day disciplinary hearing and was ultimately fired from her nursing job of 13 years. “I was found guilty basically for saying that males can’t become females and that trans women are biological males.”
She claims the actions taken against her amount to political discrimination and ideological enforcement by regulatory bodies.
Hamm is seeking reinstatement, a public apology, compensation, and a declaration that her rights were violated.
“I’ve never seen racism in our health-care system,” Hamm said during the interview, criticizing a new ethics code for nurses that calls for denouncing “white European-centric models of nursing.”
She argued that most nurses privately disagree with such directives but fear speaking out. “There’s a huge culture of fear within the health authorities.”
The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has not yet ruled on whether it will hear the complaints.
Meanwhile, a hearing still needs to be scheduled to determine the penalty in the disciplinary case against Hamm.

On today’s episode of the Candice Malcolm Show, Candice talks about how the pendulum has swung back towards common sense in Canada and away from the worst excesses of the militant woke ideology.
