A new middle school in British Columbia will soon open its doors under a name that many Canadians will find difficult to pronounce: stɑtl̓əw̓ Middle School.

The Langley Board of Education announced the name on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, emphasizing it’s devotion to promoting the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (Halkomelem) language, spoken historically from Fort Langley to the mouth of the Fraser River. The school is located in the Willoughby Slope neighbourhood in Langley, B.C.
