Alberta separatists have scored a major victory after their independence petition cleared the signature threshold, bringing the province closer to a potential vote on leaving Canada.

Elections Alberta said Friday it validated 223,181 signatures for Mitch Sylvestre’s Referendum Relating to Alberta Independence petition, well above the 177,732 required — 10 per cent of ballots cast in the 2023 provincial election.
