Alberta proposes southern B.C. route for West Coast pipeline
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith initially pushed for a northern B.C. route to a marine terminal, but faced strong First Nations opposition and a federal tanker ban.
The Alberta government has officially proposed a southern West Coast pipeline route, abandoning its push for a northern B.C. northern-coast option.
The pipeline will run from Bruderheim, Alberta, to B.C.’s south coast, largely following the Trans Mountain route and its existing Indigenous partnerships, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said.
“Obviously it will take time and there is much work ahead of all of us, but I say to all people across Alberta and across Canada, we will get the job done,” Smith told reporters Thursday in Calgary.
“The window of opportunity is open now,” she continued. “Recent global events have made it clear that Canada’s safe and reliable sources of oil, gas and critical minerals are vital to the world’s economy.”
