A 92-year-old man has died nearly two weeks after being assaulted in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, prompting a homicide investigation by city police.
Vancouver police say the man, a resident of Chinatown, was discovered in medical distress on the afternoon of March 18 in an alley behind the Carnegie Community Centre, near Main and East Hastings streets.
He was transported to hospital by ambulance and succumbed to his injuries on March 31.
According to police, the man had told his family he was stepping out to use the washroom at the Carnegie Centre. When he failed to return after 20 minutes, relatives began searching for him, unaware he had been assaulted and found in the alley.
They were notified of his condition by the hospital nearly two hours later.
“We have confirmed the victim in this case was assaulted by multiple people prior to his death,” Const. Tania Visintin said in a statement.
“We share the community’s grief over this loss of life and we understand there are many questions. Information about this death will undoubtedly impact peoples’ sense of safety and community in Chinatown. Although it will take time, we are committed to finding all of the answers.”
No arrests have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.
These criminals should all be put in prison. This is BC, however, and sadly they are probably already back on the street.
