1.5 million Canadians spent over 14 hours waiting in emergency rooms

The Canadian Institute for Health Information said patients requiring admission to hospital faced the longest waits, often spending more than 48 hours.

Canada’s healthcare system is wrought with long wait times, as a new report details that 10 per cent, or roughly 1.5 million people, spent more than 14 hours in the emergency room between 2024 and 2025.

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, patients requiring admission to a hospital faced the longest waits, with about 180,000 people spending more than 48 hours in the emergency department waiting for an inpatient bed.
