$135M Ghana bike boondoggle ran out of gas—at your expense
Global Affairs Canada bankrolled thousands of free motorbikes in Ghana, but forgot to budget for fuel, spare parts and maintenance.
Global Affairs Canada spent $135 million buying thousands of motorbikes, trucks and farm equipment for Ghana—but failed to budget for fuel, spare parts and maintenance, according to an internal evaluation obtained through Access to Information.
The report found the department “failed to provide necessary oversight” and identified “several areas of relative weakness” that undermined the program.
According to Blacklock’s Reporter, taxpayers paid for 3,196 motorbikes, 266 pickup trucks, 16 station wagons, and uniforms and work boots for 2,305 agricultural extension agents tasked with advising farmers on irrigation, fertilizer use and crop production.
