A 47-year-old teacher from Crossfield, whose identity is protected by a court-imposed publication ban, appeared in Airdrie Provincial Court on May 7 and was released on bail under revised conditions following charges of multiple sexual offences involving eight alleged victims.

The man was arrested on July 9, 2025, after what authorities described as an extensive investigation. He faces 16 Criminal Code charges: eight counts of sexual assault and eight counts of sexual exploitation. All alleged incidents occurred while he was employed as a teacher at W.G. Murdoch School in Crossfield.

As an educator visiting South Korea, the contrast between its education culture and ours is difficult to miss. Canada’s education system is not failing, but it is drifting. It still performs respectably by international standards, but respectability can hide decline.

The data points in this direction. In the most recent PISA assessments, South Korean students scored 527 in mathematics, compared with Canada’s 497 and the OECD average of 472. Korea also outperformed Canada in reading and science, though by smaller margins. Canada remains above average, but Korea’s stronger results reflect something deeper than test preparation. They reflect a culture that still treats academic effort as a serious obligation.

In too many Canadian classrooms, expectations have softened. Homework has been reduced. Deadlines have become flexible. Grades are often inflated. Discipline is treated with suspicion, and failure is increasingly viewed as something students should be protected from rather than something they should learn to overcome. Under the language of inclusion and emotional safety, we sometimes risk sending students the wrong message: effort is optional, consequences are negotiable, and excellence is no longer required.

South Korea offers a useful, if uncomfortable, contrast. Its education system is built on structure, pressure, and expectation. Students work long hours. Homework is standard. Effort is assumed. Students learn early that discipline, persistence, and delayed gratification matter.

That does not mean Canada should copy Korea. The Korean model has serious costs. Academic pressure can be intense. Students often face stress, sleep deprivation, and narrow definitions of success. But dismissing Korea because of its excesses would be a mistake. The lesson is not that pressure is always good. The lesson is that effort matters. Standards matter. Serious learning requires discomfort, repetition, discipline, and the ability to stay with difficult problems.

Canada does many things well. It values student well-being, inclusion, and emotional safety. These are real strengths. But they must be matched with clearer standards and more consistent expectations. Compassion in education should not mean the removal of challenge. Support should help students meet demanding standards, not replace those standards altogether.

Education’s primary job is not to make students comfortable today. It is to make them capable tomorrow. A system that refuses to demand effort risks producing young people who see difficulty as unfair rather than normal.

The goal is not to choose between compassion and excellence. The goal is to build students who are both supported and capable, both healthy and resilient. That balance is what Canada should now aim to restore.

For years, the food industry assumed Canada’s protein future would be shaped by a dramatic shift toward veganism and strict plant-based eating. That future never arrived. Instead, Canadians have chosen something far more pragmatic and far more disruptive to the market: flexibility.

The latest Canadian Food Sentiment Index from Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, supported by Caddle, shows a remarkable transformation in dietary behaviour among Canadian adults. Omnivorous diets, meaning consumers with no specific dietary restrictions, fell from 67.6% in Fall 2024 to 55% in Spring 2026.

Based on Canada’s adult population, that represents approximately 2 to 3.5 million fewer adult Canadians identifying as omnivores in less than two years. Meanwhile, flexitarian diets climbed steadily from 4.6% to 9.4%, paleo also expanded significantly. Vegetarian and vegan diets, despite years of headlines suggesting explosive growth, remained relatively small and mostly stagnant. In fact, at 2.6% of respondents in Spring 2026, the data suggests that roughly 600,000 adult Canadians identify as vegan today. That figure has barely moved over the last several survey waves despite enormous media attention and billions invested globally into plant-based alternatives.

This is not a vegan revolution. It is a protein recalibration, and it is already reshaping Canada’s agri-food economy. Canadians are no longer defining themselves by strict labels like “vegetarian” or “vegan.” Instead, they are becoming opportunistic eaters, adapting their diets based on price, convenience, health goals, protein density, satiety, and increasingly, metabolic concerns tied to GLP-1 medications like Ozempic. The old assumption was binary: consumers would either eat meat or reject it. But today’s consumer wants flexibility and optionality. Someone may eat steak on Friday, Greek yogurt on Saturday, plant-based protein on Monday, and skip lunch entirely Tuesday because of appetite suppression drugs. This creates a far more volatile and fragmented protein economy.

The graph tells us something profound: Canada is not abandoning animal protein. Canadians are becoming more selective about when, how, and why they consume it. That shift is already sending shockwaves through food manufacturing and retail. Traditional meat categories are under pressure, especially premium red meat consumed at home. But value-added proteins are thriving. High-protein snacks, fortified beverages, dairy-based protein products, egg innovations, and hybrid foods are outperforming expectations. The success of protein-enhanced foods, from yogurt to beer, reflects a market obsessed not with ideology, but functionality. Consumers increasingly ask one question before buying food: “What does this do for me?” That is why cottage cheese suddenly became fashionable again. It is why protein bars now occupy entire aisles. It is why dairy is quietly winning the protein wars despite years of criticism from anti-animal-product activists.

Ironically, many plant-based food companies misunderstood consumer psychology. Canadians never truly wanted ultra-processed meat replicas as much as investors believed. They wanted moderation, affordability, and nutritional efficiency. Flexitarianism offers all three. The data also reveals the immense economic pressure Canadians remain under. Meat inflation has consistently outpaced many other food categories in recent years, while household budgets remain stretched. For many households, especially larger families, dietary adaptation is no longer philosophical. It is financial. That is why flexitarianism is growing faster than veganism. Consumers are not necessarily making ethical declarations. They are managing budgets.

The implications for agriculture are enormous. Canada’s livestock sector is unlikely to disappear despite years of predictions suggesting otherwise. But producers will face a more segmented marketplace. Premiumization, traceability, sustainability claims, animal welfare standards, and protein functionality will matter more than sheer volume growth. Meanwhile, pulse producers and ingredient manufacturers may benefit enormously from hybrid consumption patterns. Lentils, chickpeas, pea proteins, and beans are increasingly integrated into mainstream diets without consumers fully abandoning meat. Canada, one of the world’s largest pulse exporters, is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this middle ground.

For over a decade, the food conversation was dominated by activists predicting the collapse of animal agriculture and the inevitable rise of fully plant-based diets. But Canadians have chosen moderation instead of absolutism. That may frustrate ideological purists on both sides, but it reflects how real consumers actually behave during periods of economic uncertainty. People rarely eat according to political theory. They eat according to affordability, biology, convenience, and habit. The future of protein in Canada will not belong exclusively to meat, nor to plants. It will belong to flexibility.

A convicted sex offender with a history of violent sexual crimes has been released into the Toronto area under statutory release conditions and will be closely supervised by the Correctional Service of Canada, according to a community safety notice issued this week.

Dave Anthoney Avis, 50, was released on May 7, 2026, after serving a federal sentence following convictions in 2018 in Winnipeg for sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault causing bodily harm and three counts of forcible confinement.

John Weissenberger is a Calgary geologist and former executive. He was Chief of Staff in the federal Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, 2007-2008.

Early in 1951, a refugee in Bavaria tried a second time to emigrate to Canada. His mistake on the first attempt had been to write, under “occupation”, the word “teacher”. He’d been a trained teacher before the war, but Canada didn’t need teachers. Asking around, it seemed Canada needed labourers, so when my father wrote “labourer” on the application, he was accepted.

Despite being a “land of immigrants”, Canada used economic criteria to choose who we took. Bigotry and prejudice had also existed – as with the continuous voyage requirement (1908) and Chinese Immigration Act (1923) aka “head tax” – but this changed with the introduction of what would become the world-famous “points system” in 1967.

Under the points system, applicants were objectively assessed using transparent criteria like vocational/occupational preparation, labour market demand, age, proficiency in English/French and family ties. Implicit was the belief that immigration served the needs of Canadians and our economy. The points criteria regulated only the “economic” immigration stream, skilled workers and their dependants, forming about half of the total. The two other streams – family reunification and “humanitarian”, comprising “government-assisted” and privately-sponsored refugees – were unaffected.

The points-based system would be described by one New York Times contributor as “Canada’s ruthlessly smart immigration policy”. It was emulated by other countries, including Australia, New Zealand and Britain. For almost 50 years, points criteria selected most of the 9-million-plus immigrants Canada took during that time.

Then, beginning in 2015 the Trudeau Liberals, as the National Post’s Tristin Hopper recently put it, drove us to “Cuckoo town”.

The Liberals’ immigration failures are almost too numerous to list, with fresh scandals appearing almost weekly. These range from raising the economic newcomer target by 54% to 401,000, fast-tracking processing by lowering standards, or exploding the foreign student and temporary foreign worker categories to 3.2 million people, to not even vetting asylum-seekers. This has resulted in up to 500,000 “undocumented” people at large, almost 300,000 unprocessed refugee claimants and a further 28,000 failed claimants awaiting removal.

After all, in 2017, Justin Trudeau tweeted a global invitation to all migrants. Now the bills are piling up, with asylum-seekers getting generous benefits, and childcare for temporary residents costing over $3 billion in 2021-25.

Unsurprisingly, Canada’s pro-immigration consensus disintegrated. Today everyone from think-tanks to Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives are proposing reforms. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith plans to take controversial questions about immigration directly to a referendum.

Still, Canadians haven’t really debated immigration’s fundamental questions, like, What exactly is it for? Does it merely serve short-term economics or shape our nation’s future prosperity and identity? What debate there is reveals both regional divides and ideological anger.

Also largely off the radar is our looming demographic collapse. With our average birthrate in 2024 of just 1.3 (versus the bare replacement level of 2.1 live births per woman), without skads of newcomers Canada’s population could halve by 2100.

This prompts the key question: to grow or not to grow. Unsurprisingly, this gets different answers in Quebec versus English Canada.

La belle province seems to favour “cultural preservation” over growth, which means declining population as well as smaller economic and – much to their chagrin – political clout. English Canada is largely on the growth train, if only to preserve our Ponzi-ish social programs. The Conference Board of Canada, for example, extolls immigration for bolstering “expensive social programs by increasing the ratio of employed workers to retirees.” Others like the Century Initiative, just want to grow to 100 million Canadians by 2100. But to what end?

There’s certainly no shortage of prospective new Canadians. In 2024 Gallup found that 25-30 percent of the entire developing world wants to move. Their top destination is, no surprise, the U.S.A., with 18% choosing that destination. But much smaller Canada came second at 9%. At least 80 million people want to become Canadians right now.

This underscores the importance of Canada choosing – how many, and who – which really starts the political fireworks. Conservatives want to tie admissions to economic indicators and curb excess benefits for newcomers, while the Liberals’ approach has not changed much. The Liberals currently called criticizing the ballooning asylum-seeker-related costs “punching down” on the “most vulnerable” and, of course, racist. The fact that everyone from Justin Trudeau to the current immigration minister think “terrorists have a right to be citizens” reveals their fundamental beliefs.

They appear convinced that, while there’s a rainbow of different cultures, with myriad diverse attributes, these are somehow qualitatively equivalent. This ignores extensive European research that ties immigrants’ economic success and integration to education and skill levels. U.S. economist Garett Jones also shows how immigrant outcomes vary dramatically by source country, while their habits and values (e.g. savings rates, trust of government and personal responsibility) persist through generations.

So history and current research support Canada being choosy, but we are also in a kind of selection trap. If we don’t admit people who will maintain whatever attributes made Canada attractive in the first place, Canada will deteriorate further and fewer will want to come. Consequently, a rigorous, objective selection process is imperative.

Many on the Left, however, believe that the very fact we choose at all with our current system is a “moral failure”. Such thinking extends right to the Liberal government benches, which means profound reforms will be very difficult.

My family’s experience was that it’s better to be a refugee than to be dead. And it’s vastly better to be in Canada than to be a refugee. But we got in through Canada’s choice, based on Canada’s needs, not our hopes. Worked then, and would work now.

U.S. Christian musician, Sean Feucht, who drew national attention after several venues across Canada attempted to block his performances over his support for U.S. President Donald Trump, blasted Canada on X after learning the “church” openly “promoted suicide.”

As first reported by Rebel News reporter Drea Humphrey, Gilmore Park United Church invited community members to “learn about” Canada’s “Medical Assistance in Dying” (MAiD) program during an event scheduled for Wednesday, according to a message posted outside the church.

Teachers at a Regina high school abruptly pulled students out of a Globe Theatre performance after staff said the play’s sexual content went far beyond what they were led to expect from a supposedly school-approved matinee.

The play, Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer, was marketed to students as a satirical courtroom comedy about Indigenous land rights and resistance. But teachers at Campbell Collegiate decided to leave early after the production’s “maturity” crossed the line, according to a letter sent home to parents.

The play was produced by Regina’s Globe Theatre, called Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer and written by Kevin Loring. It’s described as a “courtroom comedy” and a “satirical farce meets spicy rom-com.”

A February briefing note to the deputy minister of housing, first obtained by Blacklock’s Reporter, said the transfer was handled confidentially because it was “likely to generate negative stakeholder reactions.”

Shortly after Hank Idsinga decided he could no longer be in the presence of an officer senior to him — due to the man’s rabid Jew hatred — the retired homicide inspector was ostracized within the senior ranks of the Toronto police force.

As he details in his newly released tell-all memoir— The High Road — Confessions of a Homicide Cop — the incidents all occurred in the spring of 2020, right in the midst of COVID.

First, the officer in question referred to a kosher BBQ as a Jew-Q (calling his “joke” hilarious) and then he commented that a Jewish officer in a good news video got away with whatever (he didn’t say what that was) because “he’s a f***ing Jew.”

The final straw for Idsinga was when the selfsame officer – in the elevator with him heading to a meeting with a Jewish lawyer – said: “I can’t believe we have to pander to this f***ing Jew.”

He is careful not to name names in the book.

As the 34-year-old officer said in a recent interview, the police did nothing to address the virulent problem. Instead, he was excluded from important decisions and meetings, he was targeted twice for removal from the homicide squad and was isolated professionally from the senior officers’ clique.

His decision to avoid contact with the Jew hater made his last couple of years on the force “very uncomfortable” because that senior officer was part of the “group of friends controlling the police service, promoting and protecting each other.”

His 336-page memoir — which he wrote himself — says everything we’ve suspected about the highly secretive police force where nepotism and a self-congratulatory culture run rampant and serious incidents of incompetence and racism are swept under the rug.

The anti-Semitism hit him especially hard because his grandfather, Arthur Jacobs, was murdered in the Holocaust in 1942.

Arthur – labelled a “privileged Jew” – was arrested by the Gestapo in late 1936. He was placed into the concentration camp system and never seen by his family again, Idsinga says in his book.

He was transported with 100 other prisoners from Dachau to Schloss Hartheim in Austria. It was in the gas chamber that he was murdered.

Idsinga says the intergenerational trauma from wartime is real and he had anxiety dreams in his childhood (nightmares interspersed with images of swastikas and the gas chamber.

From an early age, he decided he wanted to do something to catch the bad guys – and that led him to policing.

The response so far to his revelations has been predictable. There have been efforts to undermine him amid claims that with his book, he’s “undermined public confidence in the police service.”

There have been promises by police board chairman Shelley Carroll and chief Myron Demkiw to look into Jew hatred in the police force and to be more aggressive about laying charges in the anti-Semitic attacks that have predominated on the streets of Toronto.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Demkiw and Carroll are part of a group of policing officials and politicians – including Mayor Olivia Chow and her sidekick Ausma Malik – who have allowed the hate to fester.

Idsinga says he “never imagined” that the current anti-Semitism crisis would deteriorate to the point where synagogues are being shot at, Hamas supporters are permitted to parade down the city’s streets, Jewish victims are assaulted on Bathurst Street and synagogues require guest lists for entry and armed police officers with assault-type rifles for security.

He attributes that to the overall “breakdown of morality in the country” and the “normalization of criminal behaviour.”

“If any of you at any time can’t walk down any street or any sidewalk in this city without fearing for your safety, we’re doing something wrong,” he said.

He said it’s up to the police “to do something about it.”

He concedes Chow has not been “overly supportive” of the Jewish community while completely supporting the Muslim community.

“There is certainly a lack of political will municipally affecting the police response,” Idsinga said.

“This (lack of) political will filters downward into the executive level and the command level leadership,” he added.

He feels the turning point in Toronto was when former PM Justin Trudeau and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni had to cancel an event at the Art Gallery of Ontario due to the protests out front.

He said the paddy wagons should have been lined up and protesters arrested.

There’s no way that should have happened, he added.

“Since then, it has been protest after protest after protest with some pretty blatant criminal offences taking place on camera and right in front of the police officers and no action being taken,” he said.

The best leaders were those “on the ground with the rank and file” assisting with proper knowledge, he says. None of that is happening.

Idsinga can’t accept the argument, either from his former police colleagues, that charges won’t stick because they don’t “rise to the level of criminality.

“Can you imagine if I had one murder charge withdrawn and I stood up and said I’m not going to bother laying murder charges anymore because the Crown might withdraw them?” he asked.

“It’s just a ridiculous statement.”

He emphasized that legal advice is just that – legal advice.

Police brass can consider the advice, but they can also find another lawyer and get another opinion.

Idsinga says the two-tiered policing seen over the past 2 ½ years “certainly proves” something is “still rotten” in the organization.

He also feels the TPS communications strategy is abysmal despite spending millions of dollars on corporate communications per year.

I’ll say.

But he saves his most pointed criticism for Chief Myron Demkiw and the “process” followed to put him in the job.

He said “nobody” knows who participated in the last process to select him as chief and his recent contract extension was anything but transparent.

“If the board (headed by Shelley Carroll) isn’t being transparent to the public about who they’re considering for chief, how can you preach accountability and transparency at any level of the police service?” he asks.

It seems being part of the “inner circle” is key.

Despite knowing Demkiw for more than 30 years and having had “high hopes” for him as Chief, “It’s been let down after let down after let down.”

And as I’ve found out, Idsinga says he’s “very much” thin-skinned. He blocked me on X two years ago for criticizing his handling of anti-Semitic protests in Toronto.

As proof, the former homicide officer says he does commentary on AM640 and because they’ve been critical of Demkiw in the past few years, it’s the only radio station he won’t go on.

As Idsinga says, Corporate Communications explicitly states “he won’t come on because you guys don’t say nice things about him.”

This, folks, is the police chief of Canada’s largest city.

Maybe he should listen to what Idsinga and other critics have to say.
